If you struggle with substance abuse disorder, you are not alone. Many people who struggle with illicit substances face criminal charges every day. To fight the charges and avoid repeating the same pattern, patients may strive to become clean. However, if you hear some myths surrounding substance abuse, you may want to give up.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, people may claim all you need is willpower, but the truth is more complex.

You can beat substance abuse disorder anytime you want to

Fighting substance abuse disorder does not come down to who has willpower and who does not. Prolonged use of drugs can alter how your brain functions. The intense cravings and lack of impulse control may cause you to make snap decisions against your better judgment. It becomes difficult to quit on your own. Most people require help to beat the disorder.

You cannot treat substance abuse disorder unless you willingly enter treatment

You do not have to want to go to treatment. Patients can be unsure and some can face pressure from the legal system, their families or employers. In general, the people who meet pressure benefit as much as those who enter treatment of their own free will. As you begin to recover, you will think more clearly and want to work towards change.

Some people may try to make you believe that you cannot fight the disorder or that you have to fight for the rest of your life. However, recovery can allow you to live a productive life without the constant battle.

Drug crimes carry severe penalties, but if you cannot beat addiction, you may find yourself returning to the same behaviors.
