Just over 70% of Florida voters approved the use of medical marijuana in the Sunshine State in 2016. Over the course of the past several years, a growing number of Florida doctors have issued recommendations permitting state residents to obtain medical marijuana cards. Over 500,000 Florida residents now have medical marijuana cards.

Republicans work to limit or eliminate medical marijuana

Before the referendum in which a clear majority of Floridians approved the use of medical marijuana, a majority of Republicans in the state legislature said they did not want to relax laws relating to marijuana crimes. They continue to maintain this position. Republicans in the legislature are again pushing legislation to lower and significantly restrict THC levels in medical marijuana products.

Physicians oppose limiting THC limitations

Physicians across the state have taken a firm stand against efforts to lower and limit THC levels in medicinal marijuana products. Physicians and others opposed to restrictions were successful in staving off efforts by the GOP to severely limit medicinal marijuana in this manner in the last legislative session. The battle lines are again being drawn; early indicators show that the move to lower and restrict THC levels is likely to fail this legislative session as well.

If you are charged with some type of marijuana crime, a Florida criminal defense lawyer may explain your legal options. The first step in understanding and protecting your legal rights is to schedule an initial consultation with a criminal defense attorney. An attorney may be able to show a judge that you have a valid medical marijuana card or other authorization and ask for the charges against you to be dropped.
