In what was called a retaliation shooting in a Fort Myers community on July 4, 2017, one man was left dead, and another critically injured. The 3000 block of Thomas Street, in the Dunbar neighborhood, was shot up. Police claimed to have found a 35-year-old man by the name of Taheed Stoner with gun in hand, shooting at a home.

The shooting was believed to have been in retaliation to Stoner’s girlfriend being shot in an earlier instance. She had been struck in the hand by a bullet while driving her car in the same block. She told police that she believed either her son or her boyfriend may seek retaliation for that injury. He fled the scene, but officers were able to locate him quickly and make an arrest.

Now, two years later, Stoner has had his day in court. On Friday, December 6, Stoner’s trial came to an end and a Fort Myers jury found him not guilty. He was acquitted of murder, and released from custody.

When accused of an offense as serious as murder, especially knowing you are not guilty, the most important decision you can make is who you choose as your attorney. When life or death is literally at stake, a Defendant should have the best, most experienced legal representation possible. Just as in this case, a not guilty verdict would not have been found without the ability to prove reasonable doubt. Often, it is difficult for a Defendant to do so alone. He or she would need the help of a skilled attorney with access to resources outside the scope of a pro se Defendant. Don’t hesitate to contact the best for your defense, or for a post-conviction appeal.
